Instead of Folders (like other email applications and services use) The Gmail email service uses ‘Labels’ to group your email messages.

[One of the top requests from Gmail users to Gmail is to implement more of a Folder-like system as opposed to just ‘labels’]

Well, to make Gmail labels just a little more useful Google published a post on how to hide and view their labels.

There’s now a feature in Gmail that lets you hide your read labels and only shows labels that have unread messages associated with them, the label also shows the count of said unread messages.
