Pittsburgh, Pa.—On Feb. 19, from 6 – 8 p.m.Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, in partnership with the Pittsburgh Urban Magnet Project (PUMP), will host Hothouse Happy Hours, a 21 + event for young professionals, featuring specialty drinks, inspired bites and dynamic special guests. Held in the public garden’s Tropical Forest Conservatory, this event is the first of three socials that will be held throughout the year, each highlighting a different theme and locally made libations.
Celebrating the joys of urban gardens, Hothouse Happy Hour will showcase the Pittsburgh-sourced spirits of Maggie’s Farm Rum, whose staff will be present to talk about distilling, and Phipps’ own edible gardening expert, Mike Bechtel, will share tips on growing herbs indoors. As an added bonus, the first 150 guests will be invited to pot their own plant to take home.
Phipps’ renowned gardens will be open for exploration, too, giving Hothouse Happy Hours attendees a chance to take in the beauty of the Orchid and Tropical Bonsai Show, which runs from Jan. 18 through March 9, as well as the new Tropical Forest Congo exhibit, which opens to the public on Feb. 7. There is nothing like the splendor of the Conservatory after dark so registrants are encouraged to bring a friend or two, and make some new ones, as they unwind at one of Pittsburgh’s greenest venues.
Registration for Hothouse Happy Hours is $25 for members of Phipps and PUMP, and $35 for nonmembers, and includes light fare. A cash bar, showcasing cocktails created by Maggie’s Farm Rum, will also be available. Reservations can be made online at phipps.conservatory.org, or by calling 412/622-6915 or emailing members@phipps.conservatory.org by Feb. 16; space is limited. The next two socials for 2015 will be held on April 9 and July 15.
