Hands On: 48 Premium Chalkboard Labels

I received a pack of chalkboard labels from Kanvas the other day which, on first glance, are a Pinterest dream with all the recent crockery and mason-jar craft craze. My husband had a slightly different idea and took a nod from a Pinterest pin to put liquid soaps in pretty glass containers. This is an easy one- just get olive oil / vinegar cruets and fill up with dish soap or hand soap (I used one for the soap we use to wash our chicken’s fresh eggs off with) and slap a label on- voi-la!  And make sure you recycle the original plastic packaging 😉

Hands On: 48 Premium Chalkboard Labels So how do Kanvas labels hold up? They’re a pretty convenient alternative to messing around with chalkboard paint which is awesome for walls and doors but if you’re as messy as I am, can totally ruin anything smaller than a basketball. Pre-cut and available in 4 shapes, the labels are nice and thick so they have that nice 2D effect on a surface as well as being pretty hard to tear. The labels are also not punched out of the backing; they sit on top. The advantage here in theory is that you don’t have to punch them out and risk shredding the label and backing. Anyone who scrapbooks has had this happen to them if using cheaper labels/ stickers / seals.  However, I’m  not sure if maybe in shipping the labels were exposed to heat or something that melted the backing but some of them stuck to the backing and wouldn’t peel up. The rest of them were fine.

Kanvas is sold by Quiverr through Amazon and unfortunately Amazon doesn’t always include a ton of information. I would have liked to know ahead of time if the labels are microwaveable or dishwasher-safe. I don’t own a dishwasher and I did try the labels on a juice glass but I didn’t have a ceramic mug handy to test on for the microwave.

I tried 3 different mediums on the labels to see what I liked best- regular white Crayola school chalk, a gold metallic Sharpie and a white permanent opaque marker from Recollections. The labels didn’t show the actual chalk all that well- it came out rather dull and didn’t wipe off all that well either. The gold Sharpie went on very smooth and showed up quite well as did the opaque marker which I think is the winner. I think my dog is going to love his treat jar 😉

Hands On: 48 Premium Chalkboard Labels Not knowing how safe it would be to microwave / bake Sharpie metallics or the opaque marker, I wouldn’t recommend using the Kanvas labels on something you’re going to eat off of but I do think they’d be great for jars of anything you need to store- kids’ toys, tools, office supplies, crafts, etc. Slap one on, mark it with a permanent marker and go!
