(September 11, 2010) — The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) today announced a
Pittsburgh stop on their national “Wow! That’s Engineering!®” tour. The Pittsburgh event, taking
place at the University Center on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University, is designed to
encourage young women to become more interested in careers in engineering and technology.
The event will take place on Saturday, September 18th, 2010.

The “Wow! That’s Engineering!®” event honors the achievements of women and girls as they
develop and discover the future through technology with events around the country which take
place throughout the year. The target audience for the event are girls in 6th – 8th grades. The
girls will participate in hands-on engineering activities, meet women engineers and technologists
and hear first-hand about these exciting careers. The event also features a parent/educator
program. The parents/educators will hear from and network with engineers, engineering
students, university faculty, and STEM experts.

The need for the United States to build a new generation of leaders proficient in engineering
and technology is at the top of the nation’s agenda. While encouraging all young people to
pursue careers in related fields is critical, this initiative has even greater significance among the
nation’s young women. Approximately 10 percent of American engineers today are women and
the number of women entering colleges of engineering is declining.

In order to encourage young women across the country to get involved in engineering and
technology, the Society of Women Engineers will be hosting, Wow! That’s Engineering!®”
