Pittsburgh, Pa. – Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is pleased to announce today that Director of Human Resources and Operations Jan Kortz has received one of Pittsburgh Business Times’ 2012 Human Resource Leadership Awards recognizing top professionals in the region who have made great strides in shaping their workplaces. Presented at a celebratory luncheon, the honor was accepted by Kortz and 11 other winners on September 19, 2012 at the Westin Convention Center Hotel.

As an employee of Phipps since 1998, Kortz—who earned her human resources certification from Robert Morris University in 1999—has supported the nonprofit through a time of rapid transformation that included major campus expansion, a stronger focus on sustainability, and large-scale events such as the 2009 Pittsburgh G-20 Summit. Now, as the Center for Sustainable Landscapes readies to open and Phipps enters a new era, Kortz continues to usher evolution, making her an ideal awardee.

“Jan has always been an integral part of our team but now more than ever, during this exciting time of growth at our organization, her talents really shine,” says Phipps Executive Director Richard V. Piacentini. “We are very proud of her accomplishments and congratulate her on winning this award, which recognizes all of her hard work and dedication to making Phipps a first-rate place to work.”
“Receiving this award has been such a great honor,” says Kortz. “I want to thank Pittsburgh Business Times for counting me among the recipients, as well as all of my wonderful colleagues at Phipps who work beside me every day to make our organization one of the very best around.”

Joining Kortz in receiving the 2012 award are: Lisa Umali, Walmart Stores, Inc.; Nancy Sheppard, Pittsburgh Technical Institute; Kathy Wiley, Carmeuse Lime and Stone; Caroline O’Connor, Carol Harris Staffing, Inc.; Stacy Freshwater, Sierra w/o Wires, Inc.; Angela Piermani Comas, Meyer, Unkovic & Scott LLP; Kelly Gray, FedEx Ground; Christy Uffelman, Mascaro Construction Company; Lois Bradley, The Bradley Partnerships; Erroline Williams, Duquesne University; and Lisa Stoebener, Dollar Energy Fund.
